Adding and configuring modems

Configuring modems

You can choose how to add the configuration information for modems:

NOTE: A driver for the serial port to which the modem is connected must have already been configured into the kernel. If the serial port is on a non-SCO supported or an intelligent serial card, it must be configured to use a third-party driver. Refer to the instructions for installing the driver provided with the serial card.

If you have to relink the kernel with a new serial port driver, exit the Modem Manager, and then shut down and reboot your system.

You must re-invoke the Modem Manager after your system has rebooted to be able to detect a modem automatically.

You do not need to reboot the system to add a modem manually to a newly defined port, but you will not be able to use the modem or the port until you reboot the system.

Detecting a modem automatically

To detect a modem automatically, in the Modem Manager:

  1. Verify that the modem is connected and switched on.

  2. Select Add from the Modem menu, and then select Automatic detection.

  3. Select the serial port to which the modem is attached, or select All to have the system examine all serial ports (if the ports are autodetected as being available).

Modems that automatically autodetect are always initially configured for bi-directional usage. After detection is completed you may want to go back and change the direction by selecting Modem -> Settings -> Port.

  4. Click on Detect to start the system searching for the modem. As the serial port is probed, the indicator lights on the modem should flicker on and off for several seconds. While the Modem Manager probes the serial port(s), it updates the list of the modems that it has detected.

  5. When it finishes probing the ports, select the modems to add, and click on Add.

If more than one modem is matched, you must select one (and only one) for a given port, before adding the modem.

If the system does not detect a modem, check that the modem is connected correctly and is switched on. Some uncertified models of modem are not capable of being detected. If a model is not detected, you can choose the "Standard 9600bps Modem" or the "Standard 56kbps Modem" models. These models may or may not work with your modem, but are offered as an alternative to manually configuring a modem. If automatic detection still fails, enter the configuration manually as described in ``Adding a modem manually''.

Adding a modem manually

To add the configuration information for a modem, in the Modem Manager:

  1. Select Add from the Modem menu, and then select Manual configuration to bring up the Modem Configuration window.

  2. Enter the following information:

    Modem vendor
Select the manufacturer of your modem. If this is not listed, select (Standard Modem Types).

    Modem model
Select the modem model. If you selected (Standard Modem Types) for the Modem vendor, select the appropriate Standard speed bps Modem. Double-clicking a model brings up more information.

    Modem port
Select the serial port to which the modem is attached.

If you want the modem to answer incoming calls automatically, click on Configure port and follow the instructions given in ``Configuring a serial port'' to configure the port. If you use the Serial Manager to configure a serial port as incoming only or incoming and outgoing, the Modem Manager will configure the modem to automatically answer (``auto-answer'') incoming calls.

If you want to set the modem settings, click on Configure modem.

You can also double click on any modem model in the Modem configuration screen to get detailed information on the modem and vendor. This information is also available by selecting: Modem -> Information on the main screen.

  3. Click on OK to accept the configuration.
