Configuring WAN connections
You can use the WAN view of the
Network Configuration Manager
to configure:
To switch to the WAN view, select
View WAN.
To configure a WAN connection using the
Network Configuration Manager,
follow these steps:
-
To define and configure a
modem,
select
Hardware Add new WAN device Modem.
This adds an entry for the device to the
/etc/uucp/Devices file.
To define and configure an
ISDN terminal adapter,
select
Hardware Add new WAN device Add new WAN device.
If outgoing calls are enabled, this
adds an entry for the device to the
/etc/uucp/Devices file.
If you want to configure UUCP, PPP
or SLIP over a dedicated serial line, see
``Configuring serial ports''.
-
If you want to configure outgoing
UUCP, PPP or SLIP connections,
select
Call Services Outgoing.
This runs the
Dialup Systems Manager
which allows you to define the system to be dialed by
adding an appropriate entry to the /etc/uucp/Systems file.
You can also set up the login chat script
to be used with the remote system, restrict the times at which outgoing
calls may be made to it, and specify the retry interval for file
transmission by
uusched(1Mbnu).
NOTE:
If you want to configure an outgoing PPP link, the
PPP Outgoing Connection Wizard
will create an appropriate entry in the Systems file for you.
You do not need to run the Dialup Systems Manager to do this.
-
If you want to control dial-in access to your system, select
Call Services Incoming.
This runs the
Dialin Services Manager.
You can choose to
filter incoming calls
so that only connections from certain specified
telephone numbers are permitted.
You can also
assign services
such as PPP that should be automatically
available to incoming calls to a specified
telephone number or device.
NOTE:
You do not need to run the Dialin Services Manager
unless you need to filter incoming calls or assign services automatically.
The facility to obtain the caller's telephone number or the
telephone number that was called is sometimes not
available with ISDN lines. Your telephone company
may provide this service for an additional charge.
-
To set up outgoing or incoming PPP links,
and to fine tune the configuration of PPP, select
Software Configure PPP
to start the
PPP Manager.
To quickly configure the details of an outgoing PPP link to
an Internet Service Provider (ISP) or to a remote access
server belonging to an organizational intranet, select
Wizard Add
within the PPP Manager, then
select Outgoing -- Internet/Intranet,
and click on Start to invoke the
PPP Outgoing Connection Wizard.
To quickly configure a system as a remote access server for
incoming PPP access by remote users, select
Wizard Add
within the PPP Manager, then
select Incoming -- Remote Access Server,
and click on Start to invoke the
PPP Incoming Connection Wizard.
To configure
incoming and outgoing SLIP
links, select
Software Configure SLIP.
