You can choose how to add the configuration information for modems:
If you have to relink the kernel with a new serial port driver, exit the Modem Manager, and then shut down and reboot your system.
You must re-invoke the Modem Manager after your system has rebooted to be able to detect a modem automatically.
You do not need to reboot the system to add a modem manually to a newly defined port, but you will not be able to use the modem or the port until you reboot the system.
To detect a modem automatically, in the Modem Manager:
Modems that automatically autodetect are always initially configured for bi-directional usage. After detection is completed you may want to go back and change the direction by selecting Modem Settings Port.
If more than one modem is matched, you must select one (and only one) for a given port, before adding the modem.
If the system does not detect a modem, check that the modem is connected correctly and is switched on. Some uncertified models of modem are not capable of being detected. If a model is not detected, you can choose the "Standard 9600bps Modem" or the "Standard 56kbps Modem" models. These models may or may not work with your modem, but are offered as an alternative to manually configuring a modem. If automatic detection still fails, enter the configuration manually as described in ``Adding a modem manually''.
To add the configuration information for a modem, in the Modem Manager:
If you want the modem to answer incoming calls automatically, click on Configure port and follow the instructions given in ``Configuring a serial port'' to configure the port. If you use the Serial Manager to configure a serial port as incoming only or incoming and outgoing, the Modem Manager will configure the modem to automatically answer (``auto-answer'') incoming calls.
If you want to set the modem settings, click on Configure modem.
You can also double click on any modem model in the Modem configuration screen to get detailed information on the modem and vendor. This information is also available by selecting: Modem Information on the main screen.
