WAN software
UnixWare provides the following facilities for data communication
over WANs:
Basic Networking Utilities (BNU)-
The
BNU
software includes
the UNIX-to-UNIX system copy (UUCP)
facility for remote file transfer and command execution. It also
provides the foundation for remote login commands such as
cu(1bnu)
and
ct(1bnu),
as well for as the SLIP and PPP protocols. These
protocols allow the establishment of network layer protocols such as
the Internet Protocol (IP) over WAN connections.
The BNU software on its own does not provide support for
running network layer protocols over point-to-point links. It must be
used in conjunction with SLIP or PPP to achieve this.
Serial Line Internet Protocol (SLIP)-
The
SLIP
protocol allows the transmission and reception of
IP datagrams over point-to-point links.
It has been superseded in many respects by
PPP.
Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP)-
The
PPP
protocol allows the transmission and reception of network packets
over point-to-point links. Unlike SLIP, however, it has
the potential of supporting network layer protocols other than IP.
PPP also provides many other features that are not available with
SLIP.
