mdmcfg(1M) installs vendor supplied configuration files.
Configuration files are typically distributed on a diskette or CD-ROM, or over the Internet. With a diskette or CD-ROM the media needs to be mounted or copied somewhere. With Internet distributions, the configuration file will need to be downloaded onto the local system. Alternatively the file could be installed on one system and the directory exported through NFS to another system that needs the new modem file.
Once the configuration file is downloaded, you need to enter the following command:
/etc/uucp/mdmcfg -I modem
The modem can either be the path to modems.idx, the path to the directory containing modems.idx or the path to the modem configuration file. The file will then be installed if it is a valid modem configuration file. If the modem is already present on the system, the file is only overwritten if the creation date attribute (Created) is more recent than the original file installed.
The modem must also be supported. See mdmcfg for details. At least one of the values present in the ``WorksWith'' and ``Certified'' fields must be present in /etc/uucp/Release for the modem to be supported. ``Modem compatibility table'' identifies what token must be present in the ``WorksWith'' or ``Certified'' fields in /etc/uucp/Release, in order for a modem to be supported by a release. For example, if a modem configuration file only contained a ``WorksWith'' field with a UW7-1 token, the modem would be supported by UnixWare 7, Release 7.2 but not Monterey 64.
