Managing system performance

Monitoring system performance

The need to improve and control system usage may not be evident unless you monitor your system regularly. Without regular monitoring it may not be obvious that a system is degraded. For example, just as a driver might not notice the difference between 48 and 50 miles per hour without the aid of a speedometer, you might not notice a 4 percent degradation without performance monitoring. There are many ways to monitor system performance.

The real-time performance monitor (rtpm) can be used to monitor and analyze ongoing performance characteristics. This tool is useful for monitoring the performance of small to moderate sized systems.
