Managing system performance

Managing and improving system performance

There are many factors to consider when tuning your system. First, you need to analyze your system and determine whether it is running well. If there are problems, you need to determine how to correct them. You should try to optimize the system as a whole, not just for one job or type of job.

The performance of your system can be degraded for reasons that are related to user practices or applications. You can run various tools to characterize and analyze the system work load. Then you can use this information to identify the problems that are slowing your system. The most common bottlenecks are associated with CPU resources, memory resources, disk resources, or networking.

Remember that while information about workloads should be gathered during prime time, most system tuning should be done during off-hours.
