Using the KBD STREAMS module, characters stored in the internal code set can be mapped to those supported on the terminal. This section describes the use of serial line terminals.
Serial line terminals are those connected to the system's serial ports (as compared to the integrated console which has its own port).
In Europe, there are many different types of terminals, each using different coded character sets. Tables showing the characters in each of the internal code sets supported by the Language Supplement can be found later in the chapter.
Each type of terminal has a specific set of control sequences for such things as cursor movement, cursor addressing, and so on. The operating system capitalizes on the available attributes by using a terminal database that is accessed according to the assignment of the environment variable TERM - see terminfo(4).
