Introduction to using the system

Using disks, diskettes, CD-ROM and tapes

You can work on files stored on any medium for which your computer has the appropriate driver. The main storage media are:

Hard disks
A hard disk is normally installed in your computer. You can always see the files and directories on the hard disk.

Floppy diskettes
Floppy diskettes must be inserted in the diskette drive on your computer. If you are using UNIX, you must mount the diskette filesystem to view the files on it. See ``Mounting and unmounting filesystems'' for information about mounting filesystems.

CD-ROMs
CD-ROMs must be inserted in the CD-ROM drive on your computer. If you are using UNIX, you must mount the CD-ROM filesystem to view the files on it. See ``Mounting and unmounting filesystems'' for information about mounting filesystems.

Tape cassettes
You normally copy files from tape cassettes before you use them, or copy files to tape to archive them. You can use several special programs to do this. See ``Backup and Restore'' in the online documentation for details of the backup and restore services provided with UnixWare.
