When you increment the line speed for a rotary connection at the command line, only the <Break> key is guaranteed to work correctly.
While it may appear that pressing the <Esc> key, or for that matter, pressing any other key on the keyboard makes the rotary connection move to another speed, it will only work at certain baud rates (and won't take you through a complete sequence of speeds).
What is actually happening is this: given certain baud rates combined with certain rates at which you are sending characters, the sequence of data may be interpreted as a break. For this reason, when logging on, make sure you always use the <Break> key to move to new baud rates.
