Adding hard disks

Adding hard disks

Use this procedure to add additional hard disks to your system.

NOTE: The procedure given here is normally used for adding hard disks to your system. However, if you have a system that accommodates hot addition or removal of mass storage devices, and you need to add or remove a disk while the system is running, use the procedure given in ``Hot adding or removing SCSI storage devices''.

  1. Verify that the disk controller or adapter is installed. If you have not yet added a controller to the system, or if you need to add an additional controller, see ``Adding hardware controllers'' for instructions.

  2. Verify that the appropriate device driver is installed, and that the disk controller or adapter has been configured. If you have not yet installed the device driver or configured the controller, see `` Configuring hardware controllers'' for instructions.

  3. Configure the hard drive. For example, you may need to set the SCSI ID and termination on a SCSI drive, or set jumpers on an IDE drive to identify the primary (master) or second disk. Follow the instructions provided by the drive manufacturer.

  4. Physically attach the new disk(s) to the disk controller or adapter. Follow the instructions provided by the drive manufacturer.

  5. Reboot the system.

The system should be able to access the hard disk following the reboot.

  6. Run diskadd(1M) to add the disk.

The diskadd utility guides you through the activities necessary to complete installation of the new disk. These activities include setting up partitions, surface analysis, making and sizing new filesystems and enabling filesystems to be automatically mounted when the system is brought up.
