Managing filesystem types

The relationship between the filesystem and the storage device

Filesystems are kept on random-access disk devices. (A filesystem can be put on tape, but that is normally done only to create a backup copy in case the filesystem must be restored.) Before you can install a filesystem on a storage device, you must format the device. See ``Formatting the storage device'' for full information on formatting a storage device.
