The relationship between the filesystem and the storage device
Filesystems are kept on random-access disk devices.
(A filesystem can be put on tape,
but that is normally done only to create
a backup copy in case the filesystem must be restored.)
Before you can install a filesystem on a storage device,
you must format the device.
See
``Formatting the storage device''
for full information on formatting a storage device.
