Overview of VERITAS product documentation on UnixWare 7 systems
The UnixWare 7 operating system includes the following VERITAS products:
-
The ``basic'' version of the VERITAS filesystem (VxFS).
It includes only the following functionality:
-
extent-based allocation (file storage is allocated as one or
more adjacent blocks of data)
-
extent attributes (extent allocation policies associated with
a file)
-
fast filesystem recovery (recovery following a system failure is
speeded up by use of a tracking feature called ``intent logging'')
-
enhanced security (the Discretionary Access Control (DAC) mechanism)
-
support for BSD-style quotas
-
support for large files and large filesystems (larger than 2GB)
-
The ``basic'' version of the VERITAS Volume Manager (VxVM).
It includes only the following functionality:
-
concatenation (data is mapped linearly onto one or more subdisks in a plex)
-
spanning (concatenation using subdisks that reside on more than one
VM disk)
-
The VERITAS Visual Administrator (VxVA).
(A graphical user interface for Volume Manager.
Although all Volume Manager functionality is covered,
the interface will prevent you from executing tasks
that apply to products you have not licensed.)
In addition, you can license the following products.
-
The advanced VERITAS filesystem product (VxFS).
It adds the following functionality to the ``basic''
version:
-
online administration (defragmentation and resizing of filesystems)
-
snapshot mounts for online backup
-
enhanced application interface (for pre-allocation, unbuffered I/O,
and caching advisories.
-
enhanced mount options
-
improved synchronous write performance
-
enhanced I/O performance
-
DMAPI (Data Management API)
-
The VERITAS mirroring product.
Mirroring adds the following functionality to the ``basic''
version of Volume Manager:
-
mirroring (a technique of using multiple plexes to duplicate
the information contained in a volume)
-
The advanced VERITAS Volume Manager product (VxVM).
It adds the following functionality to
the ``basic'' version:
-
mirroring
-
striping (a technique of mapping data so that the data is interleaved
among two or more physical disks)
-
RAID-5 (a method of providing data redundancy through the use of
parity--a calculated value that can be used to reconstruct data
after a failure)
-
logs for mirror recovery
VERITAS books are included in SCOhelp
under the ``Filesystems'' topic:
These books describe the three VERITAS products
that you can license.
However, only portions of the VERITAS books apply to the two ``basic''
products and the mirroring product.
